Nelson Hancock, my second-great grandfather, was born a slave in 1855. He was the son of slave-owner John Douglas Hancock and slave Lelia Moore. Like Nelson, many slaves were fathered by their owners. While the family tree of John Douglas Hancock can be traced back to England in 1525, very little is known about Lelia Moore, other than the fact that she was the property of John Douglas Hancock. Lelia Moore was sold to another plantation before Nelson turned five. He never knew what happened to his mother.
